Waiving Landfill Fees for the May Long Weekend

Drop off your residential waste for free from May 21 to 24!

It’s time to do some spring cleaning! The Municipality is waiving landfill fees for residential waste during the May long weekend.

Free disposal of residential waste

You can drop off your residential waste at the landfill for free from May 21 to 24, from 8:15 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. Examples of residential waste:

  • broken toys
  • Furniture
    • To note: Charges for mattresses, box springs and CFCs are not waived
  • gym equipment
  • garden waste
  • animal waste
    • To note: double bag your pet’s droppings before taking it to the landfill

Free disposal of residential waste is limited to loads of 400 kg or less per household.

Stop at the main ladder

You must weigh in and weigh out at the main scale when depositing items at the landfill. Main balance opening hours are 8:15 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.

Tarp your load

For everyone’s safety, be sure to cover your load before taking it to the landfill.

The law requires that every load traveling on a public road be covered and secured to prevent debris from falling from the vehicle. Failure to comply with this instruction may result in fines and penalties.

Industrial and commercial waste

Fees are only waived for residential waste, which does not include renovation, demolition, industrial and commercial waste. Regular fees are still charged for disposal of non-residential waste and other items.

Municipal landfill

The municipal landfill is located approximately one mile south of Fort McMurray on Highway 63, with the entrance on the west side of the highway.

The busiest time at the dump is between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. In order to shorten waiting times, it is strongly recommended to avoid peak hours.

Stay tuned for upcoming announcements on large bin and heavy item pickup programs.
